REM Award Honorees (2002) — Kathleen Camann (Literacy Volunteers – Waterville)
The Greater Waterville Area Affiliate of Literacy Volunteers is proud to select Kathleen L. Camann as its honoree for the 2002 REM Community Awards. Kathy, as she is known to her friends and colleagues, resides in Winslow, with her husband Daniel and her dog Sheba.
Kathy and Dan moved to Central Maine from Western New York State thirty years ago. At the time, Kathy was a manager with AT&T, which became NYNEX, and is now Verizon. She continued her management career in various departments of the company here in Maine. For the last 12 years, her job required her to commute to Portland, Bangor, and Augusta. After a 31-year career with this company, Kathy retired in 1997.
Representing NYNEX, she served on the United Way Budget and Allocations Committee for five years. It was during this period that Kathy was introduced to Literacy Volunteers of America. She began her volunteer work with Literacy Volunteers in 1992. By being involved in a community organization, Kathy feels more closely connected to her community. In addition to her work with LVA-Waterville, Kathy is active in the Central Maine Garden Club as Program Chair, and is a life member of the Telephone Pioneers.
She is selected as LVA-Waterville’s nominee for the 2002 REM Community Volunteer Award for the following reasons:
- She has been a committed volunteer for LVA-Waterville, serving continuously in various capacities since 1992. She observed her 10th anniversary with our organization at last year’s Annual Meeting.
- She trained as a tutor. In this capacity she worked with two students. She then applied her skills to the matching process, taking responsibility of matching tutors and students in the program and following up with them to meet their needs -thereby delivering continuous programming services for the organization.
- She served as a member of the board for eight consecutive years, and as board treasurer for one term, retiring from the board in 2000.
- Following her years of service on the board of directors, she then accepted the responsibility of being the gatekeeper of the organization, serving as the point of contact for all calls coming into the organization’s hotline. She keeps updated on LVA’s program calendar, providing information on LVA’s program services, and referring calls to others as appropriate.
- She serves as an ex officio member of the Annual Meeting Committee each year by tracking the phone-in RSVP’s and coordinating the buffet.
Because of her continuous commitment and valuable services to the LVA-Waterville Area Affiliate, we have chosen her for the 2002 REM Community Volunteer Award. Congratulations, Kathy!
