REM Award Honorees (2007) — Meg Wickes (Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area)
Meg Wickes has been a Hospice Volunteer since 1991, soon after retiring from a position at the Colby College Museum of Art. During her years as a Hospice Volunteer Meg has been assigned many Hospice clients for whom she provided support such as respite, transportation and assistance with errands — and always as a genial and compassionate listener. Most recently she has served as our librarian. Every Monday morning Meg updates our reading lists, writes book reviews for our newsletter and returns books to their appropriate spots on the library shelves.
Meg has been with us through several moves from one office space or building to another; she has weathered the effects of significant growth in services and in the number of clients we serve; she has kept pace with the expansion of our library from 25 books and one video to hundreds of books and dozens of videos. She has done all this and more, with grace, a beautiful smile and the kindness for which she is known. Meg is a quiet presence in our office, but there was never anyone more dedicated, reliable or flexible than she. We are grateful for all she has done and continues to do for Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area and proud to present her as our REM honoree for 2007!
