REM Award Honorees (2009) — Ellen Wells (Kennebec Messalonskee Trails)
KMTrails is pleased to honor Ellen Wells as its 2009 Volunteer of the Year for her boundless enthusiasm and love of the outdoors. She hiked the 100 mile wilderness from Monson to Katahdin when only 12, is a Maine Guide, and loves nothing better than encouraging kids and adults to get out there, get exercising, and enjoy Central Maine, this beautiful part of the planet we live on.
Ellen serves on our Publicity Committee, and also organizes walks and events for Move & Improve and MoveMore, two groups who do just that. As Community Wellness Coordinator at Inland Hospital, she also organizes the Women’s Wellness and Men’s Maintenance Fairs. Our booth at both those fairs is often mobbed by people who want to know more about the latest trail routes and “how close are they to my home?”
She is especially proud of two new trails Inland Hospital is constructing in 2010, one in the woods, the other a paved trail for residents of Lakewood Continuing Care Center to get out and about in wheelchairs, with walkers, or just holding someone’s hand. That’s Ellen for you, always looking for exciting new possibilities for young and old.
