REM Awards (2001) — Humane Society Waterville Area — Larry Mitchell
Larry was born and raised in Waterville, Maine; he is a graduate of Waterville High School. Aside from the time he served in the United States Air Force, he has lived in Waterville all his life.
Larry is the night baker with Shaw’s. He is married and has five children and four grandchildren. Besides his thirteen-year “career” with the Humane Society, Larry is very active with St. Joseph Maronite Church.
Larry Mitchell was our unanimous choice as the volunteer to honor. Few have done as much as he to further special events as well as every day operations. We simply couldn’t do without him!
Larry is our unsung hero: he runs the concession stands, solicits corporate donations, delivers materials, posts advertising, lugs tables, transports supplies, collects pet food —and generally “leaps tall buildings in a single bound”. All this he does with very little sleep, at inconvenient times, and with little advance notice.
