REM Awards (2001) — Kennebec Valley Technical College — Ann Davis

Kennebec Valley Technical College is pleased to announce that Ann Davis, a member of the Nursing faculty, has been chosen to receive the REM Volunteer Award for a non-profit organization.

Ann has been a member of the faculty at KVTC since 1988. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After teaching for a number of years Ann returned to Oral Roberts Graduate School and earned her Masters of Science in Nursing in 1994.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities at the College, Ann is active on the Employee Recognition Committee, the Accreditation Committee, and the Nursing Advisory Committee. One of Ann’s most noteworthy volunteer projects has been as advisor to the Fairfield/Norridgewock After-School Care program.

The program began in 1998 and really took hold in the 1999-2000 school year. The program is designed so that KVTC students spend time with elementary school children covering a wide range of topics. During the 1999-2000 school year, ten KVTC students worked with approximately sixty elementary school students in grades one through six.

The KVTC students worked with the children on fire safety, crafts, and CPR, as well as tutoring in a range of areas. Many of the KVTC participants were students in Ann Davis’s Maternal and Child class, which has a significant community service component. Other KVTC students working with the children were members of the Education Program, which trains its graduates to work as Educational Technicians in the schools. Ann Davis coordinated this activity, but was also a frequent participant herself volunteering to work with the children helping them make Christmas decorations as well as other things.

Outside of her work at KVTC Ann Davis is a giving person as well. She has been involved in volunteer Medical Missionary work in foreign countries on a number of occasions. Twice she has gone to Mexico and she has also made a trip to Guatemala. These trips are usually several weeks in length.

Note: Kennebec Valley Technical College has since become Kennebec Valley Community College.
