REM Award Honorees (2014) — Shasta Pelotte (Kennebec Montessori School)
We encourage our parents to get involved in their child’s education by volunteering at the school. This year, Kennebec Montessori School is proud to honor Shasta Pelotte, who has given generously of her time, energy, and enthusiasm since first enrolling her oldest daughter at KMS in 2005.
As a new parent, Shasta drove on almost every field trip, and generally lent a hand whenever she could. She also got involved early on in our Annual Auction, which is critical to the financial health and community spirit of the school. Shasta was always ready to do any job that needed doing, from soliciting donations to transporting and setting up items, selling raffle tickets, and even tabulating results during auction night, along with her husband Jerad. It wasn’t long before Shasta moved from working behind the scenes to a leading role as auction chair!
Shasta’s service to KMS is both deep and wide. She has been involved in KMS auctions for seven of the past nine years, four of them as either chair or co-chair. But her volunteer service is not limited to fundraising. As long as she has had children at KMS, she has been a devoted volunteer at school events. She has listened to emerging readers and substituted in the classroom when teachers had to be out. It turns out that she is great with children too!
It seems that Shasta’s day has far more than 24 hours in it . . . or perhaps it’s just that she gives so much of it to others. Shasta embodies the “can-do” spirit that helps non-profit organizations thrive. She is energetic and enthusiastic, hard-working yet humble.
Thank you, Shasta! You have raised funds for KMS, but, more importantly, you have raised the bar on parent involvement at our school by modeling the value of volunteerism in our community.
