REM Award Honorees (2013) — Bert Languet (Alfond Youth Center)
The Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center is proud to celebrate Bert Languet as our REM Volunteer of the Year.
Bert Languet grew up in Belgrade, graduated from Messalonskee High School, earned his Bachelor’s Degree at Colby College, and graduated from Thomas College with an MBA. The Boys & Girls Club and Y at the Alfond Youth Center is very fortunate to have Bert’s help with special projects.
Bert is very busy in our community. He is a partner and Certified Financial Planner™ Practitioner at Golden Pond Wealth Management in Waterville, a published author, and board member for the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, the Waterville Opera House, and the Central Maine Youth Hockey Association.
In 2011, Bert helped the Alfond Youth Center open the first free, public outdoor ice rink in Waterville in a generation! "He just makes things happen," says Ken Walsh, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club and YMCA at the Alfond Youth Center. "Bert’s just an incredible guy. We’re very lucky to have him on our team."
During the winter of 2012-2013, with the success and enthusiasm of ice skating at the AYC in mind, Bert helped secure grant funding from the Maine Community Foundation and Bill and Joan Alfond to build the outdoor hockey rink that stands today at the AYC. Bert’s enthusiasm grew, and he worked with our staff to produce the first annual Maine Pond Hockey Classic tournament held on China Lake.
Bert is a hands-on guy. He personally advises his clients at Golden Pond Wealth Management, built and assembled the boards for the AYC’s hockey rink, and cleared snow to form pond hockey rinks for the Maine Pond Hockey Classic.
"He's a super volunteer,” observed Ken Walsh. “Not only did Bert construct the boards for our rink, he spent countless hours putting down water to make the ice early in the morning, and shoveled snow to keep the rink in skating condition.”
Bert and his wife Sara have been married since 1993. They have three children: José, Gabriela and Joshua. Bert’s hobbies include fly fishing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and spending time with his children, including coaching them in youth hockey. A family project is running Pond View Driving Range at their home in Belgrade during the summer months.
